this was part of what our friend, paul ryan and governor romney, preached from coast to coast, advertised, campaigned, and all of a sudden it was rejected by the american public overwhelmingly. the president was comfortably re-elected and more democratic senators added who support this effort in the house of representatives, not only did we gain seats, but more than a million voters more voted for democrats than republicans. so you would think that this would be put to rest, but it is important for people to know that it is still a viable option as far as our republican friends are concerned. and it's unfortunate, because we are making some progress in reforming the health care system, not by turning our back on medicare, not by transferring the risk and responsibility to seniors and most vulnerable, but by making it more efficient, by taking some of the experiments that we have done in my home state of oregon, and as you well know, there are some health care systems in california that have already found ways to reward value over volume, to be able to extend care and do so more efficientl

governor romney did the same thing. and both of them said the american people faced a very important and fundamental choice. and the american people chose. they chose to support president obama's vision of accelerating economic growth, putting more people back to work, taking a shared responsibility approach to our long-term deficits so we bring them down in a balanced smart way and they rejected the idea that we're going to move the economy forward by giving windfall tax cuts to the very wealthiest in the country and the benefits of that would trickle down and lift everybody up. they rejected that lopsided approach that balance the budgets on the backs of everybody but the folks at the very top. balance the budget on the backs of our kids' education by slashing important investments. in that category of spending we make these important investments for our country and our future, they double the cut from the sequester. so those are our investments in our kids' education. those are our investments in science and research

have is, you have i think it is 10 democratic senators who are unaring in states that were won by mitt romney. so you have them very cautious about upsetting gun owners and upsetting powerful forces, forces with dollars to spend on campaigns like the nra. gun hobbyists who of course vote and turn out in big numbers behind this issue. this is an issue that will bring out voters to the polls. this is why you had not seen any motion on gun control before newtown. the president despite the concern of people who are gun enthusiasts had not taken any action. feinstein, senator feinstein had not taken any action even though the assault weapons ban had expired just about 10 years earlier. so you see the change. jenna: let's a little bit about that because dianne feinstein says she is disappointed in this. she said if you think congress would listen and clearly listened to the nra. a lot of fingers point to the nra as the reason behind the fact this part of the legislation was dropped. however we had this author on our program, juan, and can you bring up juan, i like to see him when i'm talking to him

attacking hillary, it is fun, and i spent most of the last two years attacking mitt romney. i was happy to do it. consultants like me love that stuff. but david is making an important point, the party has to have a set of ideas they stand for. if they're distracted, which i think they will be, right now it's the fever, they hate the president. soon it will be hillary again. that's all a distraction. the central mission should be, what do we stand for, and what we say to the middle class families who are stuck and who are not getting a pay raise in 15 years. >> we've got to jump to john mccain. this is one of the issues that the republicans are moving to talk about. because they knew what happened to them in 2012, immigration. he was in his home state in arizona, and he gave straight talk on immigration. take a listen. >> i think there's a big difference between someone who does something that's illegal and someone who is undocumented. i'll continue to call it illegal. >> this came in response to someone asking, can you stop calling us illegal. we're undocumented. he's giving

this is consistent with what the romney ryan ticket said on the campaign trail last fall. the same issue where they dodged, assembled, and ignored the perfectly reasonable question how is it possible? six months later it's back in the budget but there's still -- but there still is no answer. during the last 40 years there have been only four budgets without deficits. the last three clinton budgets and the one that george bush inherited from bill clinton. in each case taxes as a percentage of the total economy were over 20%. in this republican fantasy land budgets are balanced with revenues at 19% of the economy, yet meeting the needs of 78 million more seniors and a infrastructure deficit that is growing as america is falling apart. clearly this is not remotely possible if we are going to enjoy anything like our current quality of life. there is a real world intersection of budget saving opportunities with potential areas of agreement. health care reform is one. but not just by shifting the burden to seniors and disabled as the republicans propose in their fantasy budget.
